Sephton or Sefton, Lancashire

Historical Description

Sephton or Sefton, a township and a parish in Lancashire. The township lies chiefly between the river Alt and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, 1 mile W of Sefton and Maghull station on the Cheshire Lines Extension railway, and 6½ miles N of Liverpool, and gives the title of Earl to the head of the family of Molyneux. Post town, Blundell Sands; money order and telegraph office, Maghull. Acreage, 1234; population, 398. The manor was given at the Norman Conquest to William de Moline or Molyneux, and belongs now to the Earl of Sefton, who is chief landowner. The old parish of Sephton included Aintree, Great and Little Crosby, Blundell Sands, Litherland, Orrell and Ford, Seaforth, and Waterloo; these, with the exception of a portion of the last, have been constituted new parishes. The parish contains the five townships of Sephton, Lunt, Ince Blundell, Netherton, and Thomton, each having a parish council of five members. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Liverpool; gross value, £1338 with residence. The church contains some 13th century work, but is mainly of the time of Henry VIII.
