Rusland, Lancashire

Historical Description

Rusland, a hamlet and an ecclesiastical parish in Colton parish, Lancashire, on Rusland Pool, a feeder of the Leven, 5½ miles S by W of Hawkshead, and 8 NNE of Ulverston. Post town, Ulverston; money order and telegraph office, Haverthwaite. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1844. Population, 130. Rusland Hall is the seat of the Archibald family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; net value, £150 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Colton. The church, with the exception of the tower, was entirely rebuilt in 1868, consists of chancel, nave, and an embattled western tower, and contains some memorial windows. There are a Friends' meeting-house, supposed to have been founded by George Fox, and a parish room with reading-room attached, erected in 1890.
