Pendleton, Lancashire

Historical Description

Pendleton, a township and two ecclesiastical parishes in Lancashire, forming part of the county borough of Salford. The township is situated 2 miles NNW from Manchester, contains extensive cotton-spinning and manufacturing concerns, dye, bleach, print, and iron works, and has a post, money order,. and telegraph office (T.S.O.) under Manchester. The town-hall, a beautiful building erected at a cost of £15,000, contains an assembly-room 85 feet long, 38 wide, and 30 high. There are several churches and places of worship for all denominations of dissenters. The township comprises Pendlebury, Irlam-o'-th'-Height, and Chorlestown. It is in the parish of Eccles and the county borough of Salford, and has, an area of 24:16 acres; population, 50,543. Coal exists in seams 7 feet thick and under, and is largely worked. The Manchester and Bolton section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway passes through the township, and has a passenger and extensive goods stations. The two ecclesiastical parishes are St Thomas and St Barnabas, constituted in 1865 and 1888. Population, 19,669 and 3966 respectively. The livings are perpetual curacies in the diocese of Manchester;. value, £400 and £108 respectively. Patrons, the Vicar of Eccles and the Bishop of Manchester.
