Historical Description
Leeds and Liverpool Canal, a canal in Yorkshire and Lancashire; from Leeds, where it commences by a junction with the river Aire, past Shipley, Bingley, Keighley, Skipton, Colne, Barnley, Accrington, Blackburn, and Wigan, to Liverpool. It was commenced in 1770 by a company empowered to raise £320, 000 in shares, and was opened in 1816. It is 128 miles long, the Bradford Canal being 2½ miles long; Douglas Navigation, connecting with the Ribble, 8 miles; and Leigh branch, from Wigan, 7 miles. It rises 411 feet and falls 471 feet, with ninety-five locks on the Douglas Navigation and three on the Leigh branch, and connects the navigation of the Gel-man Ocean with that of the Irish Sea.
