Historical Description
Haverthwaite, a village in Colton parish, and an ecclesiastical parish in Colton add Cartmel parishes, Lancashire. The village stands on the river Leven, 2½ miles SW of Newby Bridge, with a station on the Furness railway, and a post, money order and telegraph office under Ulverston. An ecclesiastical district from the parish of Colton was formed in 1844; to this was added in 1858 an ecclesiastical district from the parish of Cartmel, forming a consolidated district, which on a vacancy in the vicarage of Colton in 1866 became an ecclesiastical parish, and comprises the small village of Backbarrow. Population, 951. Ironworks are in Backbar-row. The living is. a vicarage in the diocese of Carlisle; net value £282 with residence. Patron, alternately the Vicar of Colton and the Bishop of Carlisle. The church is a neat edifice with a tower, and stands in a pretty spot.
