Fulwood, Lancashire

Historical Description

Fulwood, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Lancashire, on the Lancaster and Preston railway, 1½ mile N of Preston. Under the Redistribution of Seats Act, 1885, it is included in the parliamentary borough of Preston. The township is governed by a local board. It has a station on the railway, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Preston. Acreage, 2117; population, 4112; of ecclesiastical parish, 3925. This was part of the ancient royal forest of Fulwood now enclosed, and Preston race-ground was part of It. Extensive barracks are situated on Fulwood Moor, with houses for married men, a gymnasium, and a riding school. There is also the county police station. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; gross yearly value, £200 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Lancaster. The church was erected in 1864. The Harris Orphanage in the Garstang Road, for the building and endowment of which £100,000 was furnished by the trustees of the late E. E. Harris, Esq., was opened in 1888. The Roman Catholic Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor for the maintenance of the aged and helpless poor of both sexes is also situated in this township. Fulwood Park is covered with villa residences chiefly occupied by Preston tradesmen.
