Friar Mere, Lancashire
Historical Description
Friar Mere, an ecclesiastical parish in Saddleworth township, W.R. Yorkshire, at the backbone of England, contiguous to Lancashire, 1¼ mile N of Delph railway station, and 6½ SE of Rochdale. It was constituted in 1844. The village and post town is Delph, under Oldham. Population, 2774. Fairs are held on 24 April, 9 July, and 24 Sept. The manufacture of woollen cloth, shawls, flannel, and felt for hats is carried on. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £250 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Manchester. There is in the village of Delph a mission church, erected in 1884, and Congregational, Wesleyan, and New Connexion Methodist chapels.
