Wilton, Herefordshire
Historical Description
Wilton, a village in Bridstow parish, Herefordshire, on the river Wye, 1 mile W of Ross. It has a post office under Ross; money order and telegraph office, Ross. Wilton Castle is a venerable ivy-clad ruin with a modern residence within its walls. It dates from the 12th century, was enlarged in the l6th century, and burnt during the Civil War. It belonged to the noble family of Grey de Wilton, passed in 1555 to Lord Chandos, and in 1723 to the Governors of Guy's Hospital, London. Wilton Bridge, over the Wye, was built in 1597, and has a curious sun-dial on the north side.
