Much Cowarne, Herefordshire
Historical Description
Cowarne Magna or Much Cowarne, a parish in Herefordshire, 6 miles SSW of Bromyard, which is the post town. Acreage, 3330; population, 495. Cowarne Court is the seat of the lord of the manor. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Hereford; net value, £223 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Worcester. The church and spire were destroyed by lightning in 1840. The former was restored in 1873 and 1878, and contains some ancient monuments. 1 Coway Stakes, a place on the right bank of the Thames, 3 miles E of Chertsey, in Surrey. It is generally regarded as the point where Caesar crossed the Thames in pursuit of Cassivelaunus. Stakes had been driven in to defend the passage, and trunks of young oaks, so indurated as to resemble ebony, were once found at the place.
