Credenhill, Herefordshire

Historical Description

Credenhill, a parish in Herefordshire, on an affluent of the river Wye, 4¼ miles NW by W of Hereford. It has a station on the Swansea, Brecon, and Hereford branch of the M.R., and a post office under Hereford; money order office½ Hereford; telegraph office, Burghill. Acreage, 1258; population, 253. A well-wooded hill here is crowned by a double-ditched Roman camp of about 50 acres, and commands a fine view. Credenhill Park is the seat of the Ecroyd family, who are lords of the manor. The living is a— rectory in the diocese of Hereford; gross value, £339 with residence. The chureh is partly Norman, and was restored in 1861 and 1876; in the chancel is a stained window of the 14th century, containing figures of Thomas½i Beckefr and Thomas de Cantelupe.
