Church Hope, Dorset

Historical Description

Church-Hope, a cove on the east side of Portland Isle, in Dorsetshire, 2½ miles NNE of Portland Bill, and 6 S of Wey-mouth. A ruined church here was destroyed in the Civil War. Pennsylvania Castle, in a rough dell above, was built by the grandson of the founder of Pennsylvania at a cost of £20,000, and contains a collection of Chinese and Indian antiquities.
