The Dart, Devon

Historical Description

Dart, The, a river of Devonshire. It rises near Cranmere Pool, in Dartmoor Forest, and runs about 35 miles southeastward past Buckfastleigh, Dartington, Totnes, and As-prington, to the sea at Dartmouth Haven. It takes its name from the rapidity of its current, flows much on a rocky channel through some exceedingly fine scenery, and is estuarial from Totnes to the sea, a distance altogether of about 10½ miles.
