Poughill, Devon

Historical Description

Poughill, a village and a parish in Devonshire. The village stands 6¼ miles NNE of Crediton station on the L. & S.W.R.; was anciently called Pohill or Podliill, and has a post office under Crediton; money order office, Cheriton Fitzpaine; telegraph office, Cheriton. Acreage of parish, 1735; population, 248. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Exeter; .gross value, £165 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is Early Perpendicular English; consists of chancel, nave, N and S aisles, with a tower containing five bells; had at one time a chantry, but no trace of it remains.
