Cruwys Morchard, Devon
Historical Description
Cruwys-Morchard, a parish in Devonshire, 5½ miles W of Tiverton station on the G.W.R. It includes the village of Pennymoor, which has a post office under Tiverton; money order and telegraph office, Tiverton, also the hamlets of Way and Cotton. Acreage, 6044; population, 585. The manor has belonged since the time of Henry I. to the family of Cruwys. Morchard Court, the seat of the Cruwys family, was originally built in 1199, and has been enlarged and improved. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Exeter; value,'£511 with residence. The church is an ancient structure with a massive tower, and has a finely-carved oak screen. There are Congregational chapels at Pennymoor and Way.
