The Greta, Cumberland

Historical Description

Greta, The, a stream in Cumberland. It is formed by the confluence of the Glenderamakin and St John's beck; it receives the Glenderraterra, and it runs 4 miles west-south-westward to the Derwent at Keswick. The scenery on it is very fine, and Wordsworth says respecting it:- " Greta! oft as spring Decks on thy sinuous bank her thousand thrones- Seats of glad instinct and of love's carolling- The concert, for the happy, then may vie With liveliest peals of birthday harmony- To a grieved heart the notes are benisons."
