Sunningdale, Berkshire

Historical Description

Sunningdale, an ecclesiastical parish, partly in Sunninghill parish, Berks, and partly in Egham, Chobham, and Windlesham parishes, Surrey, on the Staines and Reading branch of the L. & S.W.R., 8 miles SW by W of Staines. It was constituted in 1841, and has a station on the railway, and post, money order, and telegraph offices under Ascot. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. The Sunningdale portion of Old Windsor was constituted a separate civil parish in 1894. There are many good country mansions in this district, among which are Broomfield Hall, Coworth Park, Lynwood, St Bruno, Shrubbs Hill, Sunningdale Park, and Broadlands. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Oxford; net value, £123. Patron, the Bishop of Oxford. The church, rebuilt in 1888 at a cost of about £7000, is a building of brick and stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, N porch, and a central tower. There are Baptist, Congregational, and Primitive Methodist chapels.

The Holy Trinity (parish church)

The church of the Holy Trinity, partially rebuilt in 1887-8, at a cost of about £7,347, is an edifice of brick and Bath stone in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, transepts, north porch and central tower containing a clock and one bell: it affords 600 sittings.
